The Learning Center was started in 2008. Dr. Lynne Gregorio, a former college mathematics and statistics professor, decided she wanted to help students of all ages with learning. Dr. Gregorio is passionate about developing curricula that makes learning easy and wanted to be able work with students one on one to help students realize that if material is taught in an easy to understand way, learning can be quick, fun, and rewarding.
Once she started working with students, she found herself constantly creating organized summary pages to help students learn and study from. She soon realized that if she took her ideas and put them down on paper, she could in a sense “tutor” all over the nation by providing her curriculum for purchase online. Her first project was an Algebra curriculum. She created a on-line e-course that teaches an advanced level of Pre-Algebra but could also be used as a review course of basic concepts for Algebra 1 or a lighter version of Algebra 1 for students with learning disabilities that would qstruggle with a full version of Algebra.
Her second project was dedicated to helping younger students. She wanted to create a full curriculum that took advantage of linking concepts a student already knows to concepts that they are learning in the curriculum. Hence, Progressive Math was created. She regularly writes articles for students and parents to use. More information about Dr. Gregorio’s curriculum projects and her articles can be found at Apex-Math.
Locally, Dr. Gregorio continues to work with students one on one or in small groups at The Apex Learning Center. She works with children who have learning struggles, gifted children, and students who just benefit from some extra help. She teaches reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics. The Apex Learning Center provides something different that other tutoring centers in the area. They offer instruction by someone who knows the educational philosophy of how students learn, knows the complete North Carolina curriculum, and can develop a program that is totally individualized to that one child. She believes in flexibility. Many other programs have only one set way of doing things and are not able to make changes specific to the child. Many other places use one tutor for multiple students and therefore the tutor doesn’t get to design a program that is 100% specific to the needs of that one child. We welcome you to call and talk with Dr. Gregorio and you will immediately realize her wealth of information, flexibility, and knowledge base that she can draw from.
Dr. Gregorio received her Ph.d. in Mathematics Education from North Carolina State University in 1998. Her minor was Statistics. She has worked as a college professor for undergraduates as well as graduate students. She has worked with doctoral students that were doing their statistical analysis for their dissertations. She has supervised high school student teachers learning how to teach and has provided in-service workshops for elementary teachers. She has taught beginning math and literacy skills to students as young as 3 years old and has worked with elementary, middle, and high school students. She has great success even with the most stubborn teenagers who “Do Not Want to Go to Tutoring.”
Dr. Gregorio has 4 children including 1 with special needs and 1 extremely gifted child. Her oldest son, currently 17, started his own successful business programming video games at age 13. She has homeschooled her children at different times and has provided free academic sessions to the public at the Apex learning center.
