Beginning Sewing 

Beginning sewing is designed to teach young children, teens and adults the art of sewing and design. The sewing sessions will teach students about notions, different types of fabrics and uses and also guide them in basic hand sewing and sewing machine use. Pre-selected patterns will be used to teach students how to read and cut patterns along with the fabric choices. Sewing machine care, instruction and straight stitch will be introduced and students will create 2 to 3 projects using the sewing machine.  Students will leave the class with an understanding of the basic sewing machine use, how pick, read and cut patterns and basic straight stitch sewing.


Class I    Introduction to notions, fabrics, patterns and hand-sewing (Project 1)
  • Overview of sewing kit items and uses
  • Explore different types of fabrics and uses
  • Threading a needle, sewing on buttons, hand sewn project TBD
Class II Getting to know the sewing machine: care and operation & basic sewing
  • Machine parts
  • How to thread machine
  • Using the straight stitch project 2 sewing tote 
Class III   Reading and cutting patterns (continue sewing project 2 sewing tote)
 
Class IV  Making the right fabric choices (sewing project 3 Apron)
 
 
Class V   Basic sewing using the zig zag stitch (sewing project 4)

 

 About the Instructor:

 Veronica Chapman has been sewing and working with children for the past 20 years. While serving in the US Air Force, she continued sewing and began to give private sewing classes.  She has taken the art of sewing and implemented it into a classroom setting where she introduces fabrics, basic, intermediate and advance sewing and designing.  Veronica is currently a student at North Carolina State University where she is completing her degree in Textiles Technology.
