| We have a lot to offer your child this summer. Take a look at our 2009 Summer Camp Descriptions.... PRESCHOOL ART CAMP (ages mature 3-6)The camp will focus on teaching young children to draw by looking at how shapes and color can be used to create pictures. Each day, children will start by practice drawing the basic shapes used to create the day’s picture and then put the picture together with the shapes while stressing size, proportion, and color. Games will be played in between drawing sessions to give the kids a break. Child must be potty trained and able to focus for 2 hours. Preschool Art Session 2: July 27-30 10:00-12:00 YOUNG EXPLORERS (ages 4-6)
This camp is similar to Camp Explore except the activities are specifically chosen for our younger explorers. Campers will get to explore science, drama, technology, arts & crafts, games, and drawing. Young Explorers Session 2: July 20-24 9:30-12:30 Young Explorers Session 2: August 17-21 9:30-12:30 ARTS & CRAFTS (ages 4-6)This camp is designed for the young creative mind of your 4-6 year old. Campers will get hands on experience using a variety of materials to create fun and imaginative projects. Each class will have a theme and will introduce a new creative technique. We will utilize regular household materials as well as general art supplies. Arts & Crafts Session 2: July 13-17 10:00-11:30 Arts & Crafts Session 3: August 3- 7 9:00-10:30 MAGIC TREE HOUSE CAMP (Rising grades 1-4)
Campers will explore the themes in Mary Pope Osborn’s Magic Tree House series. Each day a new book will be read to them, students follow along, and then students discuss and learn through hands-on arts & crafts and games about the theme of the book (Examples: Civil War, Pirates, Hawaii, Dolphins, Rain forest, Ancient Japan (Ninjas), Ancient China, and more…) Magic Tree House 1: June 15-19 1:30-4:30 Magic Tree House 2: July 6-10 9:30-12:30 Magic Tree House 3: August 10-14 9:30-12:30 COMPUTER & KIDS (ages 5-7)Children will explore different aspects of using the computer. They will learn how to do a Google Search, how to copy a picture off a site into a word document, explore different fonts on the computer, and learn how to cut and paste from their Google Search. They will also play academic games that reinforce basic academic learning (reading and math). They will learn how to use a paint program to make pretty art and explore the idea of computer animation. This class is limited to 5 children per class. Computers & Kids Session 1: August 3-7 1:00-3:00 (Limit 5)
ART (DRAWING & PAINTING) CAMPCampers who are age 7-13 will explore drawing and painting techniques from a professional artist. She will teach them about using circles, ovals, and ellipses to build up objects, how to incorporate shading and color for realistic drawings, and guide them through different activities to improve their artistic ability. This summer we have the following themes available to students: Pets & Animals: campers will learn how to draw different animals including cats, dogs, horses, birds, lions, and more. Art Session Animals: June 22-26 9:00-12:00 Fantasy: campers will draw or paint dragons, castles, princesses, Jack and the Beanstalk, Fairies, and Warriors in this exciting camp. Art Session Fantasy: July 13-17 9:00-12:00 Masterpiece Creation: campers will be introduced to basic skills and then will choose a focus point and be guided by our artist to create a masterpiece drawing Art Session Masterpiece August 10-14 9:00-12:00 WRITING WORKOUT (grades 3 - 8)This is an opportunity for students to get some summer practice in writing in preparation for writing tests that are given in the state of North Carolina. This is taught by a Literacy Specialist. Two sections are offered: the first is designed for grades 3-5 and the second is geared for Grades 6-8. Writing Workout Grades 3-5: June 22-25 6:30-7:20 pm COMPUTER GAMING CAMP (ages 10+)This class is geared for the older child who is interested in learning gaming environments, computer animation, and programming. This class is limited to 5 students per class. Ages 10+ Computer Gaming Camp Session 1: July 27-31 1:00-3:00 (Limit 5) ADVANCED PRE-ALG. & ALG. 1 PREP. (Gr 5- 10)This class will set a firm foundation of Algebra 1 skills that will prepare students for future mathematics classes including Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and beyond. The class breaks down basic concepts into easy to understand steps and allows students to be successful and build mathematical confidence. Any advanced student (even those not taking Algebra 1 next year) may enroll and benefit from this instruction. Students who did poorly in Algebra 1 and need a review as well as students who will be taking Algebra 1 for the first time are encouraged to take this class. Students must come to class with TI-83, 84 calculator, paper, and pencil. Advanced PreAlgebra / Algebra 1 preparation: August 3-7 3:30-4:30 ALGEBRA 2 PREPARATION(Students planning on taking Algebra 2 during the 2009-2010 school year): This class will begin with a quick review of Algebra 1 concepts (those needing a more in-depth review of Algebra 1 should consider co-registering for the Algebra 1 Prep class). The class will then provide a basic overview and build the core content for Algebra 2. Some topics to be included are: Solving Quadratics, Logs and Exponential function, Regression, finding min, max, zeros using the TI-83 or 84 calculator, and solving systems of equations using matrices. Students must come to class with TI-83, 84 calculator, paper, and pencil. Algebra 2 preparation: August 3-7 2:00-3:00 pm How to Register:To register for summer camp, please fill out our online registration form. Summer Camp registration fee is $20.00 per family (not per child). This fee will be waived for all camps that are paid for with a deposit by May 1, 2009. Online registration form: http://www.apexlearningcenter.com/registration Deposits are required to hold your spot in a class. Your spot is not confirmed until a deposit has been received. Deposits are 25% of the class fee or a minimum of $10.00. Cancellation Policy: In the event that we must cancel a camp due to low enrollment, 100% refund and registration fee (if any) will be refunded to family. Refunds will be paid in the same manner as payment is made (if paypal is used, then a paypal refund will be given). In the event that a family must cancel a student’s registration once a deposit has been made the following Refund Policy will be applied: Cancellations made with 2 or more weeks notice will be fully refunded - $10.00 administrative fee assessed (registration fees are not refundable). Cancellations made with 7-13 days notice will be fully refunded - $20 administrative fee. Cancellations made with 2-6 days notice, will be charged 25% of the camp cost but minimum of $20.00 Cancellations made without at least 48 hours notice will be assessed 50% of the camp cost or a minimum of $20.00. Camp Policies: Parents must wait in the waiting room until camp time begins, students may not be dropped off in the classrooms early. Parents must sign their camper in and out of camp at the beginning and end of each day. Make sure your registration form has a way to contact you in case of emergency. Children are to be picked up promptly at the end of camp. Campers who are not picked up within 5 minutes of the end-time of camp, will be assessed a fee of $5.00 for the first minute and $1.00 per minute there after to compensate the instructors.
