Tutoring

Our academic tutoring program offers private 1 on 1 tutoring for grades K-12.

Our K-5 program:

This program focuses on reading, writing, spelling, and/or mathematics.  We individualize each program to your child.  Children learn differently and it takes an experienced educator to be able to determine how a child learns and then tailor their educational program specifically to the learning style of the child. We can work on specific school work your child has but we can also assess the bigger picture and figure out where the breakdown in learning occurred so that we can target those skills.  If a child is missing some core knowledge or skill set then trying to work on a skill that uses that knowledge will be unsuccessful.  We are big on communication with parent and teacher.

Reading and Spelling Programs:

We combine these two disciplines as we teach students to read new phonetic patterns, we also reinforce spelling.  Our program modifies an excellent spelling program called, All About Spelling.  We highly recommend this program and we can show you how to integrate the spelling and reading at home with your child.

Middle School and High School Math Programs

ANY CHARACTER HERE
Most of our instruction in the middle and high school levels is in mathematics.  We have a two-fold approach to instruction.  First, we assess the student and provide remediation in topics that the student is not understanding.  However, since a student is also required to move forward in their classes at the same time, we try to link those remediation skills to the current materials so that as they are reviewing missing skills, they are also able to keep up with new skills.  Our second approach as been shown to be the most successful.  We use a pre-teaching approach with students.
The assumption is that the teacher presents new material to the student in the classroom.  The teacher is teaching to a large group of students rather than specifically targeting your child’s individual learning needs, so the new lesson is not understood by the student.  The student goes into tutoring and learns the material with the tutor but then is already behind in the next lesson as the teacher has moved on.

Instead we suggest our Pre-Teaching Approach.

In this scenario, we teach the student the topic before the teacher presents the material.  We approach the topic and customize it to be understandable to the students unique learning style.  Once the student goes into the classroom, the teacher presents the same lesson.  However, since the student already understands the lesson, they are able to understand the teacher presented lesson.  This way the teacher led session is not a wasted session and the information is reinforced during that time.  At our next session, we move forward rather than always being one step behind.

This method requires a talented educator who can create individualized curriculum on the spot – something that most tutors and tutoring centers cannot provide.

We also highly recommend Summer Preparation Programs.  Students who tend to struggle in mathematics can become more successful and enter a math class with a higher level of self-confidence by preparing over the summer for their upcoming mathematics course.  We focus on the foundations and major concepts that the student will encounter in their upcoming course.  When students enter the classroom with this experience and confidence, they are much more likely to succeed.
